Biography

Xiaobang Shang received his BEng (First Class) in Electronic and Communication Engineering in 2008 and his PhD in Microwave Engineering in 2011, both from the University of Birmingham, UK. Following his graduation, he continued at the University of Birmingham as a Research Fellow.

In 2017, Xiaobang joined the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) as a Senior Scientist, focusing on electrical measurements at microwave, millimetre-wave, and terahertz frequencies for future telecom and quantum applications. He was promoted to Principal Scientist in 2023. He was the Coordinator for EMPIR TEMMT project (2019 – 2022), a large-scale EU metrology project involving 19 partners globally.

Dr. Shang is a Visiting Professor at the University of Manchester and a Senior Member of IEEE. He has authored or co-authored over 120 publications and received several prestigious awards, including the IEEE MTT-S Outstanding Young Engineer Award (2025), the Roberto Sorrentino Prize (2022), the IEEE MTT-S Tatsuo Itoh Award (2017), and the ARFTG Roger Pollard Microwave Measurement Student Fellowship (2009).

He is actively involved in professional organizations, serving as a member of MTT-S Technical Committees TC-3 and TC-21, an Associate Editor for IEEE Microwave and Wireless Technology Letters (2020–2024), and the General TPC Chair for European Microwave Week 2026 conference.
